The main joints in our body are shoulders, ankles and knees. These joints can suffer from aging, wear and tear from overuse, sports, among other things.
Pain, swelling and restricted limb movement are fairly common complaints that bring us to the doctor. Areas of concern include:
-
Muscles
-
Bones
-
Ligaments (thick bands of tissue that connect one bone to another)
-
Tendons (tough, rubbery cords that link muscles to bones)
-
Joints – the hips, elbows, ankles and knees
-
Cartilage (tough, flexible tissue that covers the surface of joints and allows bones to slide over one another)
Common Sports injuries:
-
Anterior cruciate ligament (ACL)
-
Medial collateral ligament (MCL)
-
Posterior cruciate ligament (PCL)
-
Torn cartilage / Meniscal Tear
Joint Injections
A joint injection is an injection of a steroid or other medication into a joint; any place two bones move against each other and are surrounded by a joint capsule. The medication injected, is meant to reduce the inflammation and/or swelling of tissue in the joint space. This may in turn reduce pain, and other symptoms caused by inflammation or irritation of the joint and surrounding structures. Injection options include local anaesthetics, steroids and hyaluronic acid. Joint injections are commonly used for Degeneration Osteo-Arthritis of the Knee.
Facet Joint Injections
This is a minimally invasive procedure which is usually done on a Daycare basis. The procedure involves the injection of long acting local anaesthetics with steroids around the facet area, to provide pain relief. Its effects last at least 6-weeks and will also decrease the quantity and quality of any possible subsequent pain episodes. The treatment is commonly used for Lumbar Spondylosis with Facet Arthropathy.
Total Knee Replacement Surgery
This procedure results in the return of a painless and increased mobility of the degenerated knee joint and is a commonly performed orthopaedic procedure. Apart from the conventional surgical technique, additional options of Computer Aided Surgery (Navigation) and Patient Specific Implants are also available. The procedure is commonly used for Degenerative Osteo-Arthritis of the Knee.
