Taking place on the 4 th of February each year, World Cancer Day sees people from every corner of the globe uniting together to fight cancer. The fight against the disease – which is the second leading cause of death globally and is responsible for 1 in 6 deaths worldwide – belongs to every nation and citizen on the planet. This year’s World Cancer Day tagline – “We can. I can” – reflects this global unity and, whether as a collective or as individuals, we all have a part to play in reducing the global burden caused by cancer. Raising awareness worldwide
Founded by the Union for International Cancer Control (UICC), World Cancer Day provides a global platform to raise awareness of the disease, educating governments, organizations and individuals, and helping to save millions of preventable deaths each year. It presses those with the power to make real, tangible changes to take action, as well as getting vital information seen and heard by people in places that were previously ill-educated about the disease.
The event also raises important awareness of how every individual can help to make a difference to those affected by cancer. Whether it is donating towards finding a cure, volunteering, providing support for a family member or friend, or simply offering small acts of kindness and compassion to those who are currently battling the disease, World Cancer Day gives everyone the opportunity to think about what they can actively add to the fight.
Make a pledge, take action
This World Cancer Day, people from every country on the planet are being asked to think about what they can do to help. The advances in understanding, treating and fighting cancer are accelerating, but there is always more that we can do to make a difference. By standing together and pledging “We can.
