Nurses are the Heart of Healthcare
It was recently International Nurses Day earlier in May and there were displays of adulations across social media and throughout hospitals regarding our appreciation for Nurses everywhere. However, one day out of the year to proclaim our gratitude to these unsung heroes is an understatement to the acknowledgement they truly deserve. Most people fail to understand the history behind nurses and why they should be celebrated.
Nursing is a noble profession
“To do what nobody else will do,
a way that nobody else can do,
in spite of all we go through;
that is to be a nurse.”
Rawsi Williams
There are a few noble professions in this world, and practicing medicine is one of them but being a nurse could very well be the noblest in the house of medicine. There is no doubt that nurses have their hands full with the many implied responsibilities they take on for a career in health care but out of these many functions, the underlying duty of a nurse is assuming the role of a front-line health care provider.
NURSES: A VOICE TO LEAD, ACHIEVING THE SUSTAINABLE DEVELOPMENT GOALS
As nurses are involved in almost every health care procedure, they play a pivotal role in determining the quality, efficiency and accessibility of care. The health care system would benefit with cost-effective and accessible quality care if nurses could work their full scope of practice. This year’s International Nurses Day theme hits close to Ramsay Sime Darby Healthcare’s mission to promote, improve and sustain quality education that nurtures competent and compassionate healthcare personnel. As one of the pioneers in nursing education in Malaysia for the past 20 years, RSDH College earned distinction earning the ‘Seri Zamrud Excellent Nurse’ Award from the Ministry of Health Malaysia in 2007.
Nurses are the HOSPITALITY of the hospital
Training the next generation of health care professionals is an important part of what we do at Ramsay Sime Darby Health Care, so it delighted us to offer the opportunity for six nursing students from Ramsay Sime Darby Healthcare College to visit Australia for a three week placement at The Avenue Private Hospital. They were exposed to all areas of the hospital, gaining invaluable clinical experience, receiving first-class coaching and education from the hospital’s medical professionals. Despite the challenges of this new environment, the students did not fail to make the most of every moment to develop their skills and potential. They are aspiring nurses after all.
NOT ALL HEROES WEAR CAPES
“As a nurse, we have the opportunity to heal the heart, mind, soul and body of our patients, their families and ourselves. They may not remember your name but they will never forget the way you made them feel.”
Maya Angelou
Angelou’s quote is one of many that exemplifies the unique type of work that goes in to the life of a nurse. A hero by definition is someone who is admired for courage, outstanding achievements or noble qualities. Long story short, all nurses qualify as heroes.
Here’s to all our nurses, know that you are appreciated every day, week and month of year.
